Atomic Habits is a framework for building better habits, developed by James Clear to support personal development and behavior change.

Components

  • Cue: Make it obvious by using environmental design to trigger desired behaviors
  • Craving: Make it attractive through motivation techniques and reward systems
  • Response: Make it easy by reducing friction and applying the Two-Minute Rule
  • Reward: Make it satisfying with immediate positive reinforcement
A four-part loop illustrates leaving a book visible, anticipating an enjoyable break, reading one page, then enjoying and recording the session. The example pairs each stage with one of Clear’s behavior-change levers.
Conceptual habit loop with a hypothetical reading routine. Each intervention targets a different part of the behavior; the diagram does not predict how quickly a habit will form. Original diagram based on James Clear, How To Start New Habits That Actually Stick.

Usage

Used for personal habit development, helping individuals create lasting behavior change through small, consistent actions.

Examples and Applications

  • Daily Routines: Stack new habits with existing ones
