MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) is a framework for breaking down complex problems into manageable components.

Components

Mutually Exclusive: No overlap between categories
Collectively Exhaustive: Covers all aspects of the problem

A bounded set of service requests is partitioned by current status into not started, in progress and closed. Two checks ask whether any request could fit two categories or none. Categories require explicit definitions for exceptions. — Conceptual partition, not a measured distribution. A single classification rule and explicit scope make overlap and missing cases easier to detect. Usage

Used for breaking down complex problems into distinct, comprehensive categories. Particularly useful in strategy consulting and problem analysis.
